Worldwide Free to Play Roleplaying Games Day is an opportunity for gamers to discover their local games store, meet up, and play some new (or established) roleplaying games. Try out new RPGs … for free.

No experience necessary. FREE RPG DAY is an opportunity to try something different.

On the Day …

Sessions are very loosely organised as: 11-2pm and 3-6pm.

Regular opening hours for the shop are 10am-6pm, and later for games evenings. If there is enough interest we’ll keep going into the evening and it’s possible for games to start as and when players are available.

Local Guest GMs …
  • ALIENS (Free League Publishing) … 11am start
  • STAR TREK ADVENTURES (Modiphius Entertainment) … 3pm start

There are also GMs on-hand throughout for CONAN: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of (Modiphius Entertainment) and Dungeons & Dragons (Wizards of the Coast).

Visiting GMs are asked to plan for 1-2 players fewer than they can comfortably wrangle – so that there are always spaces in the room for players to squeeze in, without overloading a game – and to have some draft character templates prepared (or mostly prepared) to save time.

FOOD & DRINK

Clifton Road Games do not provide or sell food and/or drinks on the premises, but customers are welcome to bring their own.

Newtown Stores is just up the road (on your left as you exit the shop), The Clifton Inn has an in-house bakery, as well as their regular pub menu, and is also just up the road (but on the right as you exit). Exe Coffee Roasters are across the Triangle Car Park (opposite the Pyramids Leisure Centre).

We generally advise that gamers take breaks for food and drinks, rather than snacking throughout. It’s just safer for the games components.

Customer toilets are available in-store. Note that these are wheelchair accessible but not fully equiped as disabled facilities (ie. they don’t have all of the hand rails, etc).

Event Information

In-store prelease events are sealed deck, where each player builds a 40+ card deck from the cards in the Prerelease Pack (plus any basic land cards that they require). Each prerelease kit also includes a brief ‘How To’ guide for anyone not already familiar with the format. Players are then paired up for 3+ rounds of head-to-head play.

Prerelease events are designed to be fairly casual and players are free to modify their deck throughout the event (between games) but only with the cards contained in their own packs. No trading until afterwards.

Each pack costs £??. Each event lasts for 3-4 hours (deck building + 3 rounds of up to 50 minutes each).

Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate Prerelease Pack:

  • 3 Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate Draft Boosters
  • 1 foil, year-stamped rare or mythic rare
  • 1 Dungeon Card
  • 1 MTG Arena code card 
  • 1 deck box
  • 1 d20 die

Every Draft Booster contains 20 Magic cards and 1 token/ad card, with a combination of 1–4 card(s) of rarity Rare or higher, 3–6 Uncommon, and 13–15 Common cards. One card of any rarity is Traditional Foil.

MOS ISCA …

During the initial pandemic lockdown (April 2020 onwards), I began working on some terrain for Star Wars: Legion. A combination of factors – primarily nobody using the games room and not having to pack everything away every couple of days – allowed the project to get suitably out of hand and many customers will have seen this in various states of progress:

Lots has been added – some bits might even be considered finished – but it’s now past time to get some games going. The plan was to start in March, after the last of the pandemic related legal restrictions were lifted, but then everyone got infected and things got delayed until April 2022. Nobody said that Rebellion against a Galactic Empire was an easy thing …
